Refurbishment of the tower block at Plärrer, Nuremberg

The Plärrer tower block is one of the most important buildings of the 1950s in Bavaria and is regarded as the symbol of the reconstruction of the city of Nuremberg. Important elements of the original design are no longer preserved and a fundamental refurbishment is necessary due to the existing structural and fire protection deficiencies. The character and special charm of the building was determined by defining elements that will be restored by the refurbishment. In addition to the reconstruction of the typical pivoting casement windows, the façade has been given back its reinforced concrete skeleton structure with differently coloured terrazzo parapets. The largely column-free storeys now allow for flexible floor plans with open-plan ‘working environments’. Architect Wilhelm Schlegtendal attached great importance to the details of the interior fittings. Features from the 1950s can still be found throughout the building today, although many of these contemporary details have been destroyed in recent decades as a result of refurbishment and renovation work. The redesign of the interior is based on the concepts of the 1950s in order to create a harmonious and individualised spatial structure, a place with which the employees of the energy companies can identify.
In the future, the high-rise building on Plärrer will continue to retain its relevance as a living witness to reconstruction and democratisation in architecture.
