The expansive campus of the Technical University of Chemnitz houses numerous users of technical cooling systems. Establishing a central supply for these consumers proved to be both ecologically and economically advantageous.
Urban planning and technical studies identified a centrally located site that could accommodate both the cooling center and a new telecommunications hub. This allows the university's primary technical systems to share the same infrastructure routes on campus.
For both buildings, the architecture primarily serves as a shell designed to meet the requirements of the complex technical facilities. Waste heat is dissipated via a recooling system installed on the building's flat roof. Instead of using elaborate ventilation louvers, the entire building was clad in perforated metal panels with a colorful design. This solution provides adequate ventilation cross-sections for the technical systems' air intake and exhaust while maintaining the desired visual cohesion of the building's form.
