The redevelopment of the "Weltquartier" in Wilhelmsburg is part of Hamburg's "International Building Exhibition" (IBA). As a contrast to the well-known HafenCity, the working-class neighborhoods on the harbor-adjacent Elbe islands are home to residents from over 30 nations, living in cost-efficient housing developments. The renovation of the large residential building from the 1950s played a pivotal role, as Weimarer Platz, the neighborhood's central square, was completely redesigned as part of the IBA.
The existing small and structurally inadequate balconies were replaced with spacious loggias made of reinforced concrete, added to the newly insulated façade. These loggias were clad with bricks to preserve the characteristic appearance of the district.
Instead of the numerous 2.5-room apartments typical of the building's original construction, seven different apartment types were developed, ranging from 2.5 to 4 rooms. These varied layouts promote greater social diversity within the community.
The result was met with enthusiastic feedback from both long-term and new tenants. This is reflected in the lovingly designed balconies and front gardens, personalized by the residents themselves.
