Wallstrasse, Dresden

As the street name suggests, Dresden's fortifications historically stood along Wallstrasse until they were dismantled in the 19th century to make way for postal buildings near Postplatz. Today, this location is the site of an important densification project to create new residential space close to the center of Dresden.
Externally, the new buildings present themselves as robust urban residential blocks with retail spaces on the ground floor. However, for the residents, the view opens up into terraced green courtyards that provide noise protection and offer relaxation on the terraces and balconies attached to the apartments. These green "valleys" in the heart of the city are situated on the extensively landscaped roofs above the buildings' actual delivery courtyards, literally elevating urban living in central Dresden to "another level."
