The student residence on Gerokstraße in Dresden has been modernized with the goal of improving energy efficiency and increasing living space. As part of this comprehensive renovation, the existing loggias on the south, east, and west sides were enclosed and integrated into the thermal building envelope. This measure improves thermal insulation while simultaneously creating additional living space. The new exterior walls, replacing the former open loggias, feature window openings matching the size of the original windows, resulting in a harmonious and cohesive façade.

Another highlight of the renovation is the addition of new window openings between axes 7 and 8 on the east and west sides. These openings provide natural light and ventilation to the kitchens of the 2-room apartments. The ground-floor window openings have been adjusted to match the width of those on the upper floors and, where not already present, have been designed floor-to-ceiling to enhance the living quality and create a modern aesthetic.

Special attention was given to the façade design, focusing on sustainable materials and a clear vertical structure. Based on a load comparison conducted by structural engineers, the originally planned ceramic façade was replaced with a lighter curtain façade made of aluminum and aluminum composite panels. The main building was given a curtain façade made of full-story, profiled aluminum panels. The fine vertical profiling of these panels reflects the original design of the profiled ceramic elements, reinforcing the vertical orientation of the high-rise and giving it a sophisticated, contemporary appearance.

The bold turquoise-colored façade, combined with the structured surface, creates a fascinating play of light and shadow, adding depth and dynamism to the large surface. The color variations and texture contribute to an engaging and lively aesthetic that reflects both the modern character and the functional qualities of the building.

This carefully planned renovation makes the student residence on Gerokstraße a prime example of the successful integration of energy efficiency, aesthetic design, and practical living quality, while preserving the identity of the original building.
