Cooperative Urban Design Workshop Procedure

The urban design concept divides the area into three main zones: a school campus, residential quarters, and a village center featuring a mix of administration, retail, and commercial uses.
A central north-south axis, designed as a “string of pearls”, connects the Cultural Square, Market Square, Hort Forest, and School Campus, creating a continuous and identity-shaping urban experience.
The building structures follow the natural topography and integrate harmoniously into the landscape. Distinctive functional buildings—such as the Culture Café, Town Hall/Civic Center, and three-court sports hall—anchor key public spaces and give them their characteristic identity.
The neighborhood provides over 500 housing units with diverse, age-inclusive living typologies.
A green backbone with existing trees serves as a local recreation and buffer zone to the railway line, integrating areas for leisure, water retention, and ecological diversity.
The village center offers lively squares with water features and high-quality public spaces, flanked by commercial areas and a promenade.
Open neighborhood courtyards promote community interaction, biodiversity, and climate adaptation.
The education campus, with its Hort Forest and green recreational areas, fosters nature experiences and environmental education.
The mixed-use program includes residential, educational, administrative, cultural, commercial, and medical facilities at the quarter’s entrance.
A mobility hub at the train station enhances connectivity.
The mobility concept emphasizes safe, pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly routes and green streetscapes.
Following the sponge city principle, rainwater and heat are managed for resilience.
Existing green structures are preserved, while green roofs and façades strengthen the microclimate.
The result is an urban, sustainable, and socially diverse neighborhood with a strong identity and a vibrant village center for Ottendorf-Okrilla.
