Cardinal Döpfner House Domberg Freising

The Kardinal-Döpfner-Haus, the former prince-bishop's residence, has characterised the image of the Domberg in Freising for centuries. Various conversions, in eight verifiable construction phases from the late Middle Ages to the present day, can be seen in the building structure and different layers of time. The silhouette on the Domberg was fundamentally changed with the conversion into a preparatory college and the addition of the guest house by the architect Gabriel von Seidl, and the development to the south was almost doubled. Today, the tower of the successor building and the volume of the guest house are reminiscent of this structure, and the demolition of the existing guest house offers the opportunity to revitalise the historic silhouette of the Domberg and to connect the Diocesan Museum - Kardinal-Döpfner-Haus - and the cathedral via appropriate open spaces and naturally attractive pathways. The interplay of old and new creates a stimulating place for encounters, educational work and dialogue as a central event location on the Domberg.
